Last October 17 while we were in Tagaytay, we decided to drive down to Taal since, a friend from the town informed us, it is already near the place. One and a half hour after we left, I was once again reminded not to trust people from the province whenever they say that a certain place is “just near.”
We wanted to see Taal for two thing:
One, to see the Basilica of San Martin de Tours. Standing at 96 meters long and 45 meters wide, the Taal Basilica is dubbed as the largest Catholic church in Asia.
Two, to see the Our Lady of Caysasay – a 27cm image of the Virgin Mary which was fished out of the waters in 1603 and is believed to have performed healing miracles at the Caysasay spring.
We only know of these two attraction that is why we were pleasantly surprised upon arriving at the town to discover that there is quite a good number of old houses that are still standing there. I could say that it is a different breed of Vigan in terms of old structures. The town also reflects a simple and rustic life that made you want to explore it more.
Sadly, since the road from Taal back to Tagaytay is a little treacherous, we decided to head back after more than an hour but we will definitely be going back together with some friends in order to see more of the place.
